‘We Didn’t Get It Right’: Finch Woes Continues | Sports Pundit

Aaron Finch’s shocking run in T20 cricket continued as Australia were easily beaten by New Zealand by 53 runs in their opening T20 International in Christchurch on Monday.

New Zealand batted first and posted 5-184 led by Devon Conway who smashed 99no from 59 balls to rescue the Black Caps who’d slumped to 3-19 early on as Daniel Sams struck twice for Australia.

In reply, the Aussies battled with the bat, led by their skipper Finch who had a nightmare Big Bash League with the Melbourne Renegades.

Finch was dismissed for 1 while debutant Josh Philippe, who was the BBL10 Player of the Tournament, fell for 2.

Mitch Marsh offered some resistance with 45 from 33 but New Zealand skittled the visitors with 15 balls left, with Ish Sodhi taking 4-28.

But Finch’s dreadful run was a major talking scores, with his recent T20 scores being 18, 8, 0, 14, 13, 0, 10, 4, 6 and his latest 1. He’ll take some comfort that his recent Australia form, in November/December’s white ball series against India was quite good.

Speaking about the game, Finch said: “We didn’t get it right. It nipped and swung a bit under lights.”

Conway’s unbeaten 99 included 10 fours and three sixes but missing out on triple figures was an anti-climax.

“New Zealand played well. Devon Conway well and truly deserved a hundred,” Finch said.

“They’re tough to come by in T20s and he played an absolutely great knock. I thought they built a great partnership and their foundation was through their running between wickets.”

Opposition captain Kane Williamson praised Conway for reviving the New Zealand innings. “An incredible knock from Devon,” Williamson said.

“It was obviously a tough start with the bat and Devon led us back on a surface that wasn’t all that easy to start on. It was just perhaps holding a little bit. An incredible knock.”
